The Ironies of University life January 14, 2009

University is gratifying if:

  • you are able to wake up early in the freezing, snowing weather, and you can’t even turn on your heater because its frequent sound wake you at night. Despite waking up, you need to walk in the extreme weather for 10+ minutes to class, which adds up to at least 30 per day (there and back). I’m not talking about regular snowing days, but extremely cold weather about -14 Celsius, and as low as -23, in the state that even with the heater on, your normal sweaty hands becomes cold. Not covering your head will make your brain freeze, similar to slurping too much Slushie.
  • you can write thousand-word-essay(s) on a month to month basis on topics that require intense, elaborate information from variety of sources, and on top of that, electronic sources/media are discouraged because of its reliability. So does that mean outdated books, published dozen years ago, are still considered facts because it’s history? Well I believe up-to-date Internet sources from notable publishing companies, such as e-books, online newspapers and magazines, are equally as credible as outdated books.
  • you keep up with multiple course textbooks that are sometimes interesting, but the information are frequently too detailed to absorb in the allotted time; reading becomes a chore.
  • you think you are a smart person, until you realize you are barely passing the course because: a) the program requirement is demanding (70% average +), b) the people who mark your essays expect and assume that you are UNexceptional, giving you just a few points above the passing grade if you show effort, i.e. nothing is exceptional enough for them to mark at a first year level…
  • you spend more time in studying, working on assignments and projects than staying in class (20hrs++), which leaves barely anytime for leisure, if you want the 10hr sleep, that is.
  • you enjoy using the Internet a lot for school, not that you have a choice! And if you enjoy downloading your assignments, course notes, and important information off the Internet, at you discretion, with the aid of the “Help” section of the university webpage. Not knowing what your university e-mail password is until you discovered its default number with the help of your brain and FACEBOOK!? Not being able to download anything P2P, until later on you discover the tool that everyone’s been using to share media. Personally, I like the Internet, but sometimes the limit in what I do makes me annoyed. On the other hand, Internet is bad for the environment. A recent research indicates that a single click to a webpage produces on average 20mg of carbon dioxide! All technology pollute the environment in one way or another, but let’s look on the positive side…they are beneficial to us and that’s why they exist.
  • you enjoy living in residence, or at your same-old parent supervised home. Either ways, you have to follow the rules. In residence, you can talk to many students, whom go to the same university as you, and may be even the same class, and major, but you can’t go to sleep when someone’s staying up late or may be they make noises that are usually unintentional, but end up annoying you. At home, you have the limited space factor, being in the same place for the years would make you bored, unless if you are a frequent mover, having a new place to stay every now and then. On the other hand, making friends is fun…I guess if you enjoy the excessive social atmosphere.

So I thought I should mention my Boxedup list of interesting finds most anime/manga or fashion related items. I’d love to find more people who have the same interests in similar stuff to add me as a friend. It’s actually a fairly personal and yet fun interactive site.

I can’t seem to find a way to use Photoshop without my own digital camera… January 2, 2009

It seems like creating my own work, or just creating something digital without violating copyright is pretty hard these days. Today I found pictures of a really amazing ball-jointed doll online and I really want to take the image and manipulate it to create some form of banner or icon for non commercial uses of course. But then I thought about attribution part of creative commons and what a hassle that is…to e-mail every owner of the picture and then perhaps they may not even give you the response you want–that is to use the image without having the copyright sign and of course linking back to the owner. I’m kind of fed up with my lack of creativity in a way and I am just wondering the freedom of the Internet has gotten bleak.

Although I don’t believe this is no different than a typical to-do list, I’m setting a list of things I should do if in the summer when I have spare time. Of course school’s always in mind so it will not be mentioned here.

- watch completed anime series that I never got a chance to watch before: Buso Renken (more list will come soon)

- read more books from the library which I never really bothered; focus mainly on manga, illustration how-to books, and fiction

- draw more manga style art and then putting it on Deviantart

- draw my own manga and put it up online (that won’t happen anytime soon…)

- need to go to the bookstore and see if there’s any interesting manga that I haven’t read that are already published in English

Ultimate Plan

- sell my own creations online…probably cards, stationary, and calendar

- becoming *great* with digital illustration

- buying a large shelf preferably glass and creating a favorite toy/doll collection…@_@

My Ideal Kind of Shoujo Manga January 1, 2009

So I’ve been thinking about shoujo manga, and why I am so attracted by some while appaled by others. This time I’ve concluded the characteristics that I think make up an awesome shoujo manga.

1. HOT GUY TO GO with the protagonist girl

Shoujo manga is all about love, romance, and hot guys are no exception. Hot guys or bishounens are the main attractions for shoujo manga fans, and even if the story sucks, the guy that end up being together with the main character should be hot. The hot guy typcially have some kind of hidden bad, rebellious, or perverted side to him and he may not even realize his love for the main character in the beginning. But the hot guy is indepedent, looks tall and perhaps looks somewhat on the skinny side.

2. The unconventional protagonist…the dream to be of every shoujo reader

The typcial shoujo manga character is weak, sensitive, and perhaps very very girly. But I like protagonists that are independent, pretty but not overly nagging, and perhaps somewhat geeky or what I call eccentric which makes it unpredictable and interesting. I am really sick of seeing unwilling and emotional shoujo girls as main characters. They should be on the side. I believe in indepdent and somewhat lonely girls who deserve a hot guy to be with them, not because they can’t live without being emotionally abused. Being too reserved is somewhat annoying too. I wish the main character would be mentally strong like a guy, but not macho or anything. Just someone who seems quiet to strangers, but actually determined and independent.

3. NO MORE VACATION/RANDOM TRIPS

I am really annoyed by the typical shoujo manga fillers, e.g., going to visit a temple but end up being stuck there being of rain, snow, and whatever but things turns out EXPECTED. I don’t want to see another filler with the protagonist kidnapped because I know eventually they will be rescued by the guy. Skip that and think of something more creative.
