Back to University soon… August 8, 2009

4 more weeks left of vacation and freedom. This summer has been boring despite my many attempts to make it interesting. I have been to New York and New Jersey just last week but I feel somewhat annoyed when I was there. Perhaps it’s because of the lack of sleep–getting up at 6 am and the stale air in NYC and so many people. It’s not that I don’t like congested tourist destinations but on that particular day it was about to rain and probably do due low air pressure it was difficult to breathe. I walked past the Discovery Titanic exhibition but I was not able to go due to time limits… I passed the security at border without being checked. It was my lucky day! =D

I bought a Clinique Superbalanced foundation out of the whim there because it was on sale and taxless but god knows if I’d use all of it before it expires. Even though it was still $17.50, I would have paid $11.25 more back home but I don’t think it’s the best shade for me…

So school’s going to start and I haven’t cleaned out the stuff from last term and my laptop is full of files that I need to delete and look over. I am looking for a portable bed too which is hilarious because it’s not popular and it makes sales reps on the phone pause and question.

TV Series Watching Marathon July 24, 2009

I have watched quite a lot of TV series this summer, mainly because I have been doing very minimal amount of school related work. So after a lot of browsing on the Internet, I have finished watch a lot of good shows. The ones I’m referring to are not anime. I know I should be talking about that but this season’s anime show isn’t all the great. I ended up checking out dozens of TV shows to occupy my boredom and curiosity for new things. Here’s my feedback for the following series:

The Listener – I started watching this show not because of the main actor is hot (well may be he is) but because I saw so many Ads of this show by CTV. The Listener has been advertised on the bus, downtown Toronto and what drawn me to it was the Sci-fi Channel logo, not the actual show or anything. I just thought it must have been sci-fi related and that intrigued me to give it a go.  But now I’m hooked, the concept of this show involved a ER paramedic with the ability to read minds and even sense people’s strong thoughts from distance. It is really amazing to see a show so realistic, based on a typical person’s life but with a twist of paranomal crime. I can’t wait for the third season…I am sure there will be one eventually probably this Fall.

Gossip Girl – I didn’t exactly like this show because it’s really unrealistic. People are so mean to each other–so many things go wrong, and yet the very people who betrayed each other are best friends but are tied by an imaginary bond influenced by some narrator called the “Gossip Girl”. I just find this unrealistic because they are rich so they can get some lawyers to find who “Gossip Girl” is, and then sue the crap out for her to shut up. The best thing about the show is their fashion style. They wear a lot of top designer and preppy clothing and the upscale setting is somewhat worth the watch. My favourite character is Jenny Humphrey. Hilary Duff will be on the show airing in October so I’m going to watch it. It’s a good time killer.

The L Word – Totally unexpected show. I thought it was cool how the episodes had titles that started with L or something along the lines. The  show is somewhat really graphic stuff and I’m not refering to blood or murder… You can’t help but be drawn to the character’s problems especially because Shane McCutcheon looks really like a pretty charming guy but is somewhat of a playboy with a good heart and I’m sure straight females watch this for that. And how can you psychologically tell if those who are gay? Just observe the way they walk; the way they talk does not matter much.

What makes me unique but at the same time I’m trying to be normal… July 20, 2009

Okay, I have to confess that there’s just so many things that makes me eccentric or unorthodox, but people might just not know and I’m not too enthusiastic about telling people this…ha ha. Here it goes:

  • I don’t like Harry Potter; I used to think it was okay from the movies; the books were nothing special, but now the sixth movie looked terrible from the first 20 minutes. Harry Potter movie 6 was full of crap–what’s the hype and rating on IMDB about? Probably the ratings were from majority of the fans who watched the new Harry Potter movie that just came out in theaters.
  • I sleep really late and I get up really late. It’s become a bad habit that close friends know. I am trying to fix it but right now I don’t think I’m tired enough to go to sleep. I’ve read psychology articles stating that people who sleep less but enough (may be 6 to 7 hrs) actually live longer than those who sleep a lot. So it might be a good thing but my sleep times are still kind of crazy when I need to follow a normal schedule.
  • I love vampire stuff but I just don’t like Twilight. I am addicted to vampire fiction, and those paranormal romance novels like MaryJanice Davidson’s Undead series featuring Vampire Queen Betsy. I also think the Trueblood TV series is a pointless one. The first episode was crap…nothing much happened and this is what you get from long and boring novels, which is series was based. The book was okay, but the TV series is popular because the actors were attractive to other people, but not me. I look at actors rationally most of the time so judging from their looks is not gonna trick me into loving their show.
  • I like to dye my hair blue (partially and still trying now that I have blue hair dye but just trying to bleach it white first on black hair… Doh!) and no one I know seems to like that as much as I do.

The first time in my life I hated my natural black haircolour! June 28, 2009

I’ve been wanting to dye my hair blue for a long time. Today, I finally got Manic Panic Shocking Blue semi-permanent haircolour and 30 vol hydrogen peroxide. First off, the hydrogren peroxide did not lighten my black + dyed brown hair at all! I tried it twice within 4 hrs… And then I tried the Manic Panic Shocking Blue on my dyed brown hair and it also didn’t work as I intended to–my hair turned black instead of blue. Now I’m waiting for the stores to open so that I can buy a bucket of bleach powder (wow, this is dramatic hair dying process) or if I can’t find that I’ll probably buy a bleach kit. I can’t believe my hair is so stubborn.

Vampire Audiobooks — The Excellent, Good, and the Bad June 27, 2009

Lately I’ve been listening to quite a lot of vampire, paranormal themed audiobooks and here’s my verdict:

The Excellent:

The Undead Series by MaryJanice Davidson

Undead and Unwed
First Betsy Taylor loses her job, then she’s killed in a car accident. But what really bites is that she can’t seem to stay dead…
Undead and Unemployed
Being royally undead isn’t all it’s cracked up to be–there are still bills to be paid. Luckily, new Queen of the Vampires Betsy Taylor lands her dream job selling designer shoes at Macy’s…
Undead and Unappreciated
Reluctant vampire queen Betsy Taylor may rule the topsy-turvy world of the undead, but now Betsy’s discovered that she has a long-lost half-sister who’s the devil’s daughter…
Undead and Unreturnable
Though she’s the vampire queen, Betsy Taylor is much more like a princess. In MaryJanice Davidson’s novels, this high-maintenance monarch is finally coming to terms with her new status…
Undead and Unpopular
With her birthday coming up, Betsy isn’t in the best frame of mind to face the powerful European vampires who have finally come to pay their respects…
Undead and Uneasy
Weddings are never easy. But when you’re Vampire Queen Betsy Taylor, they can become downright deadly…
Undead and Unworthy
Betsy’s husband, Sinclair, has been perusing The Book of the Dead, Betsy’s being hounded by a ghost who’s even more insufferable in death than in life…

The Good:

The Good, the Bad, and the Undead by Kim Harrison Aut (Author), Marguerite Gavin (Reader)

The Good, the Bad, and the Undead by Kim Harrison Aut (Author), Marguerite Gavin (Reader)

The Bad:

Witchling by Yasmine Galenorn

Witchling (CD Audiobook) narrated by Cassandra Campbell - It's difficult to pay attention to the details of the novel due to its very boring, monotone narration. Nice cover art though, which is the main reason I tried to listen to this.

I am so pissed–Archie is proposing to Veronica…urgh they will make such an annoying comic book couple! June 22, 2009

I sort of knew why Archie will propose to Veronica instead of Betty because he’s got the hots for the glamorous looks, money, and sweet life of Veronica, but not Betty. But honestly, that’s not true love at all. The news is everywhere…people are shocked! Betty is so much better than Veronica and I still in disbelief that in September the author will release the fist part of the 6 comic sega. I hope this is not some marketing gimmick and I really wish they in the end, he will either die or choose Betty!

Restaurant Empire II – PC Simulation Game for Food Lovers, Stategists and Planners June 17, 2009

Just yesterday, I started playing this incredibly simple yet tedious but addicting PC game called Restaurant Empire II (Rated E), a sequel if not almost identical to the first installment, Restaurant Empire with the exception of better graphics, animation quality and an addition Desserts Mission where you can start a Coffee Shop from scratch (well, they gave you the kitchen at first but everything else is up to you to build). I have played both games for at least 5 hours each…and to be honest, Restaurant Empire II has too much elements that is almost identical to the new one. The intro, dialogue and conversation and especially the narrated tutorial were too similar. The guy narrator’s voice was almost was too familiar in both of the games and it  probably the same person…so you could technically skip the tutorial if you have played the first game.

There was, however, a problem that I’ve encountered which wasted hours of my freetime trying to fix a black screen when I start the game. The menu is gone…I see the hand cursor that came with the game, but not the graphics. But I just found out the solution to stop the black screen. All you have to do is go to your “Documents” folder, then “My Games” and then click the “Restaurant Empire II” folder, and then delete the two files but not the folder which contains your saved gameplay. I haven not yet confirmed if this works 100%. Will be back to confirm.

Edit: it works great now…Except my laptop crashes before I can save the game process…but that’s probably just me. X/

What I have been doing thus far–the beginning of a workoholic summer… May 9, 2009

This summer is a strange one. I have never been so different. Probably because of broken friendships which made me redefine my purpose of life.

But pretty much this summer’s been packed with a lot of thinking, not too much other activities otherwise.

List of significant things I’ve done thus far:

  • Found many books related to my major and read quite a lot of psychology and self-help books, magazines and articles including: Sciam Mind, Popular Photography, Psychology Today, Japanese fashion magazines (e.g. Kera, Nono, Kera Maniax), and other things. I don’t exactly see a need to keep track of all the books I’ve read, because unless I will use them in the future for essays, I won’t be needing those again.
  • I started playing application games on Facebook and I’m addicted! Vampire Wars is really addicting because it has a time limit and while I wait, I actually get to do other things. I know gaining points or numbers are merely a delusional way of killing time, but I still find it somewhat interesting because there’s a lot of players in this game, because it’s a social game that doesn’t require a lot of communication. It’s a fairly ironic thing. Restaurant City and Pet Society are the two other Facebook games which are almost exactly the kinds of games that you expect to see on Nintendo DS series but for free.
  • Listening to indie music and discovered new bands including: Glasvegas, Late Night Alumni and The New Cities.
  • Changed my bad sleeping habit…at least for now. =D
